A 56-year-old man was arrested in Nova Scotia and returned to Lethbridge to face charges in connection to the sexual assault of three young girls a decade ago.

An investigation was launched back in May 2005 when Lethbridge police responded to a report that a man had sexually assaulted a nine-year-old girl and two of her friends, aged nine and eleven, in the summer of 2004.

Police say the man was living with the girl’s family at the time and moved out before the alleged incidents were reported.

A warrant was issued for his arrest and police say his whereabouts were unknown until recently.

The Priority Crimes Unit, which follows up on cold cases, took up the investigation in April 2015.

They pursued a number of investigative avenues, including searching databases in each province, and located a man in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Michael Charles Chute, 56, is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching.

Chute was returned to Alberta to face the charges and made his first court appearance last week.

He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.
