The province has wrapped up the wild horse operation, and just a small percentage of the horses they expected to be caught were actually captured.

Alberta issued permits to capture 196 wild horses by March 1, but only 15 were rounded up.

Officials were prompted to action because of a ballooning population of the horses, and numerous incidents of damaged land.

Animal rights activists opposed the roundup, worried that the horses would be slaughtered after they were captured.

Five protesters camped out near one of the corrals were arrested by police and charged.

They are expected back in court in Didsbury on March 31.
