A peaceful protest in Sundre against the culling of wild horses took a dramatic turn on Tuesday when five people were taken into police custody.

The protesters were camping on Crown land near a wild horse capture site in a rural area near the town.

Sundre RCMP arrested three women and two men for mischief and say they were warned by officers before they entered the site area that they would be committing mischief if they proceeded.

Police say the group went ahead and were then arrested.

They have been released on a promise to appear in Didsbury Provincial Court on March 31, 2014.

June Burrows was one of the five people arrested and says she has every right to be on publicly owned land.

She says she was only monitoring the horse traps and was not interfering with the cull.

Burrows has moved her camp a little further from the corral and doesn’t expect to get arrested again but says she is prepared for it.

"Ya I'll put myself at risk. I'll be here. If my company sitting in this chair by the fire  is going to help the horses, I'll do it," said Burrows.

Protesters have also placed hay several kilometres east of the traps to try and lure the horses away from the area.
