About 140 guests and staff at Calgary’s Hotel Arts got a wake up call early Thursday morning that they didn’t quite expect.

Fire crews were called to the building on 12 Ave. S.W. at about 3:30 a.m. for reports of a vehicle on fire in the underground garage.

When they got there, they found the fire and told everyone to get out of the building for their safety.

Crews say that thick black smoke had filled the parkade that caused concern of the welfare of guests.

Security staff at the Transalta Building across the street opened their doors so the displaced guests could wait in the lobby.

Fire crews managed to put out the fire and cleared the smoke and carbon monoxide out of the underground garage.

No one was injured in the fire.

The guests were allowed back into the building after being out for nearly two and a half hours.
