A Calgary couple is still going strong after over 70 years together and are the CTV Calgary Inspiring Albertans.

George and Edie Maynard are reminiscing about the first time they laid eyes on one another 73 years ago.

"I was playing in a dance band, where was it? At Alberta Beach and she was dancing around the floor," said George Maynard.

Edie caught George's eye and she admits he caught hers.

At the time she was just 17 and he was 20.

The pair were married in January 1942 and George joined the air force to serve in the Second World War.

After the war they settled in, what was then, the Town of Bowness and later moved to Calgary.

It was the first of about ten moves, as George started a career in the fledgling petroleum industry.

Edie says it was up to her to prepare for the move.

"I always hated it when he came home and said we were moving, at the beginning, until I found out we had more fun," said Edie.

That attitude turned their lives into an adventure and they enjoyed getting to know many parts of western Canada.

The Maynard's daughter-in-law Lynda rive is inspired by the way George and Edie live their lives.

"I realize through their stories that it wasn't easy at the beginning and they really stuck with one another," said Lynda Rive.

The Maynards have never put much emphasis on Valentine's Day and when asked what their secret is to a long and healthy marriage, George has a practical answer.

"The good cooking maybe. No we just got along pretty well and never thought about doing anything else," asid George.

For all they've made of life and the example they've set, George and Edie Maynard are our inspiring Albertans this week.
