Fire investigators are still trying to determine cause of a fire at a large store in southeast Calgary, and say that the blaze could have been much worse.

At about 4 p.m., firefighters were called to the Jysk store at Deerfoot Meadows for reports of a fire at the back of the store.

As soon as crews arrived at the scene at 33 Heritage Meadows Way S.E., they called a second alarm due to the sheer volume of smoke and fire.

Parking lots and nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

Officials say there was a huge risk of the fire spreading due multiple factors.

“Fire travels and because it was growing along the side of the building, it could work its way to the roof, so they've had to take apart parts of the roof to be sure it hasn't spread to other areas and continues to burn,” says CFD Public Information Officer Carol Henke.

No one was hurt in the fire and there was minimal damage to a neighbouring business.

There is no word on the extent of damage to the Jysk location.
