A 25-year-old man from Lethbridge faces 12 charges in connection to a Tuesday afternoon incident in which a stolen vehicle nearly struck a member of the Lethbridge Regional Police Service.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., an LRPS officer, a member of the Taber Police Service, and two training recruits were conducting a radar speed trap near the area of South Parkside Drive and Great Lakes Road when the group witnessed a white Jeep Wrangler speeding.

One of the recruits directed the driver to pull over, but the driver ignored the demand. A second officer, standing in the roadway, directed the driver to stop. The driver of the Jeep allegedly accelerated in the direction of the officer, forcing the officer off the road to avoid being hit.

The member of the Taber Police Service entered his vehicle and chased the Jeep Wrangler. The driver and the vehicle were located, and the 25-year-old man was arrested. Members of the LRPS Priority Crimes Unit discovered the Jeep Wrangler and licence plate had been stolen.

The subsequent police search determined the man was in possession of:

  • Oxycodone
  • Marijuana
  • Stolen credit card
  • Stolen camera equipment

25-year-old Kyle Wade Kohlman was arrested and charged with:

  • Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon
  • Dangerous driving
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Possession of a controlled substance (two counts)
  • Possession of stolen property (four counts)
  • Making/possessing identity documents (three counts)

Kohlman will remain in custody until his court appearance on August 5, 2014.
