A 24-year-old man has been charged with hit-and-run causing death in connection with an incident in Brooks that claimed the life of a senior.

On May 28, an 83-year-old man was driving his motorized scooter in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of 9 Avenue and 3 Street West when he was struck by a car. The driver of the car left the scene before emergency crews arrived. According to witnesses, the scooter was toppled by a faded red, older model car of unknown make.

The hit-and-run victim was transported to hospital by ambulance. On June 10, the senior succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation into the fatal collision led members of the Brooks RCMP detachment to a suspect vehicle. The registered owner of the car, 24-year-old Abdullahi Ali Hussein, was arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Hussein is scheduled to appear in Brooks Provincial Court on July 27, 2016.
