A group of neighbours in Bearspaw, a community northwest of Calgary, are congratulating their efforts at saving a deer from a pond.

Jitka Ostermann and her son Patrick say they were returning from hockey practice when they spotted a deer fall through the ice at a pond.

They tried to get in touch with Wildlife Rescue, but they couldn’t get through so they contacted a neighbor, who came with a ladder to help in the incident.

More neighbours arrived with plywood and rope.

All together, the group of neighbours managed to guide the animal to the edge of the ice and get tow ropes around her neck and help her out.

After a few shaky steps, the deer disappeared into the bush.
