Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi is in Ottawa meeting with fellow leaders from Canada’s 22 largest municipalities.

He is attending the Big City Mayor’s caucus where he will discuss what is needed for cities from the federal government.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is asking Ottawa for $5.75B per year to cover costs on municipal infrastructure.

Nenshi butted heads with Ottawa officials in November of last year when the federal government unexpectedly pulled funding for four new recreation centres planned for the city.

The city had already paid $3.1M on the project before it learned that Ottawa scuttled the plans.

Nenshi said at the time that the government was taking Calgary for granted and Harper’s majority was made here, not in Quebec.

He added that Calgarians can no longer count on Ottawa.
