A 69-year-old man has received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 17 years in connection with the 2013 death of his estranged wife.

In Februrary, James Allen Christians pleaded guilty to a second degree murder charge in the death of Carmel Christians. The 55-year-old woman was found dead in the street along Chaparral Valley Grove Southeast on October 16, 2013.

The conviction carried an automatic life sentence. The Crown requested James Christians be ineligible for parole for 20 years while the defence asked for parole ineligibility to be set at 16 years.

At the time of her death, Carmel Christians had been granted an emergency protection order against James Christians.
