Authorities investigating a gas tanker crash north of Calgary Tuesday morning aren’t sure how long it will take to clean up the area.

At about 4 a.m, a gas tanker, hauling about 35,000 litres of gasoline, was southbound on the QEII highway when it flipped, crashing into the median.

The crash ended up closing the highway for several hours as crews cleared the vehicles.

As a result, about 25,000 litres of gas leaked from the damaged tank into the median and a wetland next to the highway.

Officials say that berms have been put in place to stop the spread of the gas and remediation is underway.

There is no estimate on how long the process will take.

The official Twitter account for the QEII highway announced the highway was fully reopened at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, nearly 24 hours after the crash occurred.

Police say they are investigating reports that the driver of the truck fell asleep at the wheel.

No one was injured in the crash.
