An early afternoon crash on Deerfoot Trail has claimed the life of one man.

At about 12:40 p.m., the driver of a vehicle travelling northbound on Deerfoot Trail lost control of his vehicle and left the road. The driver, a 46-year-old male, exited his vehicle to assess the damages and was hit when a second vehicle slid off the highway.

Two bystanders performed CPR on the man.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and EMS tranported the victim to hospital in critical, life threatening condition.

The man succumbed to his injuries and died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The identity of the man has not been released.

Northbound Deerfoot Trail was closed from north of  the Beddington Trail overpass to Airport Trail for several hours following the crash.

Police say alcohol was not a factor but speed may have been.

No word on whether any charges will be laid.
