Flood mitigation is top of mind for many southern Alberta residents and the province is holding a couple of open houses to address concerns about a proposed dry dam project near Springbank..

The Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir project is being planned for an area about 15 km west of Calgary near Springbank Road and the province says it will help control flow rates in the Elbow River during a flood.

The reservoir would store the flood water and release it back in the river in a controlled manner once the flood is over to help protect properties downstream in Rocky View County and Calgary from flooding.

Some want the project moved further upstream to the McLean Creek area but the province says the cost outweighs the benefits.

Residents of Calgary and Rocky View County are invited to two open houses in Calgary and Bragg Creek to meet with government officials and the environmental consultant on the project.
