Fire crews were called to a house fire in the city’s northwest on Thursday that heavily damaged the residence and killed two cats.

Emergency crews were called to a home at 4627 21 Avenue N.W. at about 2:20 p.m. after a neighbour called 911 to report a fire.

“When fire crews arrived the back of the home was completely involved in fire,” said Carol Henke, CFD Public Information Officer. “Lots of flames, smoke coming from the rear of the home.”

No one was home at the time but two cats did die in the fire.

“Two cats did lose their lives in the fire,” said Henke. “There is significant damage to the house, not only from the fire but the smoke as well so it will need a complete renovation or tear down but that’s up to the insurance company to decide.”

Henke says there is no indication whether smoke alarms were in the home or if they were working.

“It was so far involved that they would’ve been burned and melted by the time fire crews got inside,” she said.

A fire investigator has been called in to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
