City police will be out in force during the funeral of well-known gang member Roger Chin.

Chin was murdered July 5th and his funeral, which is expected to draw fellow gang members from out of town, is scheduled for Saturday.

It was late at night when one of Calgary's most notorious gang members was gunned down as he drove alone along Centre Street North.

Dozens of shots were fired. When police got to the scene 23 year old Roger Chin was slumped dead behind the wheel.

Chin had a lengthy criminal record and was the target of gunmen outside a gas bar last just February.

Police have been busy the past few days finalizing plans for Chin's funeral.

Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the Gang Unit says, "based on the fact the deceased was member of a gang, we expect other gang members to attend the funeral and we want to ensure rivals of deceased do not attend anywhere near the funeral home."

Gang Unit investigators say they try to balance compassion for the victim's family along with public safety at these services.

The threat of a drive-by shooting is high, so they watch from a distance; photographing people attending and taking license numbers.

Other uniformed officers patrol the streets nearby and it will be the same Saturday at Roger Chin service.

Although there has not been any violence at gang member's funerals here in Calgary, police do say they have had a few close calls. A few years ago they seized a couple of handguns from two gang members attending a service.

Its expected police will be using the HAWCS helicopter to keep an eye on the area as well.

Chin's brother Roland, also a known gang member will not be attending the funeral Saturday. He'll remain behind bars in Bowden where he is serving time for drug and weapons offences.
