Parks Canada crews removed a number of troublesome trees from the Johnston Canyon Trail and the scenic route to the waterfalls was reopened to visitors on Wednesday.

Last Thursday, a 12-year-old boy was injured when a tree fell across the trail he was on.

The boy was airlifted by STARS to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary in life threatening condition.

Since then crews have removed over 20 trees that were identified as potential problems.

Hundreds of hikers take to the popular trail every day in the summer and visitors say they are glad parks crews are addressing any dangers.

“It’s good to know that they’ve gone in and cleared things out,” said Kelly Davies. “In there it’s very crowded but even that’s reassuring because I hear there’s wildlife around as well.

Some trails, railings and the boardwalk were also damaged by the falling trees and crews have also completed those repairs.
