Fire crews with the MD of Foothills Fire Department are battling five active grass fires south of the town of Longview which have prompted the closure of Highway 22 from 594 Avenue to Chain Lakes.

Turner Valley RCMP have three suspects in custody in connection to the fires. RCMP members believe the fires were started by individuals setting off fireworks.

The fires have not damaged buildings or livestock and the majority of the fires are under control. Officers credit the actions of fire crews and civilians, and favourable weather condition, for preventing the fires from escalating.

As of 4:00 p.m., Highway 22 reopened to traffic. Firefighters will remain on scene to ensure the fires do not reignite.

Longview is located approximately 65 kilometres southwest of Calgary.
