A man convicted in the stabbing death of Brett Wiese at a house party in Brentwood in 2013 learned his fate in a Calgary courtroom on Tuesday.

On Saturday, Mitchell Harkes, 20, was found guilty of seven offences including second-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Brett Wiese was stabbed a number of times at a house party on Brisebois Drive in January 2013 and died from his injuries. Another man was also stabbed during an altercation at the home and suffered life-altering injuries.

On Tuesday, Harkes, 22, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years.

The Crown was asking for parole ineligibility for 15 to 18 years and the defence was arguing for a sentence of 10 years.

Harkes' lawyer has said his client will likely appeal the verdict.
