The trial for a second person charged in the stabbing death of a promising university student over two years ago is underway in a Calgary courtroom.

Mitchell Harkes is facing seven charges including second-degree murder in the death of Brett Wiese back in January 2013.

Wiese was stabbed several times while attending a house party in the 5100 block of Brisebois Dr. N.W.

An altercation ensued after a group of people was asked to leave the gathering and the ousted party members returned armed with knives a few hours later.

Another man was also stabbed during the incident and sustained life-altering injuries.

On Wednesday, the jury heard opening remarks from the prosecution alleging Harkes stabbed Wiese six times.

Jazlyn Radke, who was 17 at the time, was convicted of second-degree murder in Wiese’s death last spring and was sentenced as an adult to life without parole for seven years.

Harkes has pleaded not guilty to all the charges and his trial is expected to last four weeks.
