One man is dead following a Monday afternoon crash at the Sunshine Village Resort west of the Banff townsite.
According to Sunshine Village spokesperson Crosbie Cotton the crash occurred near the end of the ski hill’s operating hours on the Banff Avenue Run. The snowboarder was travelling on the beginner run, near the Wolverine chairlift, when he collided with a tree. The collision occurred at a location uphill from the start of the resort's ski out.
Ski patrollers conducting their final sweep of the hill arrived at the scene within minutes of the crash.
EMS and RCMP members responded to the scene. A STARS Air Ambulance crew was dispatched to the ski hill but the man succumbed to his injuries prior to the helicopter’s arrival.
The identity of the deceased has not been released.
“Our hearts and thoughts are with the family,” said Cotton.
Sunshine Village will conduct a review of the circumstances which may have contributed to the fatal crash and will assist local authorities with their investigations.
