A second-degree murder charge has been laid against a 21-year-old man after human remains were discovered at a construction site near D’Arcy Ranch on Monday.

Police believe the 53-year-old victim was involved in an altercation with his son at a home in the 200 block of 90 Avenue S.E. that resulted in his death.

“We attended there in the late afternoon of July 17. We engaged in some investigative steps at that time, had a conversation with the accused person in this. At that time we were able to close that particular case or that particular investigation and re-attended the following morning to ask some more questions to connect some more dots, if you will, and it was at that time that investigators at the scene were able to start to piece together some inconsistencies in some stories,” said Acting Insp. Paul Wozney of the CPS Major Crimes Section. "There was some signs that we, some signs in the residence that were certainly compelling to investigators that played a big part in this investigation.”

The victim was then allegedly transported to the construction site and his body dumped.

Zaineddin Al Aalak, 21, was arrested on Tuesday and is charged with second-degree murder.

“We’ve interviewed the accused. He has not been as forthcoming with information as we would like. We have our crime scene members on the scene right now and are conducting an examination of the scene," said Wozney.

Investigators say the victim’s name will be released once he has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police are working to track the victim’s movements before his death and are asking anyone who may have seen his 2012 white, four-door, Ford Focus with Alberta plate L83 265 between Sunday and Monday to contact them at 403-266-1234.

“One of the theories of the investigation is that car was possibly used to transport the body of the victim,” said Wozney.

Police say weapons were recovered during the investigation.

“Weapons were recovered at the residence, at the son’s residence. We believe that’s where this offence occurred," said Wozney.

Wozney says cases like this are rare.

“Unfortunately we’ve seen a spike in domestic related investigations in Calgary over the last several months. Unfortunately there are domestics that occur all the time between a father and a son. Escalating to this degree is very rare.” He said. “This case will rely heavily on forensics and we have some of the best in law enforcement that are doing that right now.”

Al Aalak is expected to appear in Calgary Provincial Court on Thursday, July 20, 2017.

Anyone who may have information on the case is asked to contact the police non-emergency number at 403-266-1234, the Homicide Tip Line at 403-428-8877, or Crime Stoppers anonymously using either of the following methods:
