Two seniors from the hamlet of Wildwood, Alberta are recovering after their SUV crashed over an embankment and flipped near Lake Louise on Wednesday.

Emergency crews were called to a single vehicle roll over at about 9:30 a.m.

When crews arrived the driver of the SUV was already out of the vehicle but the passenger was trapped inside.

Lake Louise fire crews extracted the 81-year-old woman from the vehicle and say she was in serious but stable condition.

The woman and her 89-year-old husband, who was driving, were taken to hospital in Banff. The woman was then taken to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital for further treatment.

Witnesses say the SUV was travelling east bound from Highway 1 onto Highway 93 North when is passed a motorcycle on the off ramp and then failed to negotiate the T-intersection.

The SUV went through a stop sign and over an embankment, rolling onto its roof.

The RCMP Traffic Analyst is investigating and police say they believe speed was a factor in the crash.

While officers and towing crews were on scene, a Dodge Caravan ran through the barricade and emergency lights and nearly collided with them.

Stephen Sharples, of Calgary, is charged with driving with undue care and attention.

No one was injured in the second incident, but police are reminding motorists to slow to 60 km/h when passing emergency workers.
