The Calgary Police Service continues to investigate a Tuesday morning crash in McKenzie Towne that ended with a stolen Ford Explorer at the bottom of a pond.

At approximately 7:30 a.m.,  emergency crews were called to the intersection of McKenzie Towne Drive and  Promenade Way S.E. following reports a vehicle had left the road and entered Inverness Pond.

According to witnesses, a man escaped from the sinking Ford Explorer, exited the pond and left the area.

The Calgary Fire Department aquatic team performed a search of the vehicle and the surrounding underwater area. The search revealed no other occupants and the SUV has been removed from the body of water. A boom has been placed in the pond to contain any possible fluids which may have leaked from the vehicle.

Police have determined the vehicle was stolen during a break-and-enter at a home on Elgin Estates Hill Southeast. The theft is believed to have occurred between 11:00 p.m. Monday and 6:00 a.m. Tuesday,

The break-and-enter suspect is described as:

  • A darker-skinned male
  • Believed to be in his early 20s
  • Approximately 183 cm (6') tall
  • Having a slim build

Police believe the suspect may have suffered minor injuries in the crash and was soaking wet following his escape from the pond.
