She had no food, no water and no protection from the elements in the Rocky Mountains for five nights but Bitzy, a two pound Chihuahua, made it through safe and sound.

The four-year-old dog leapt out of her owner’s car during a rest stop near the Alberta-B.C. border last week and, despite looking for her for seven hours, the owners were unable to track her down.

They posted 200 flyers in the area and even offered a reward for the dog’s safe return.

The owners thought the worst fate for the tiny canine, especially considering the type of wildlife that frequents the area, but the dog was found five nights later.

Six people were needed to catch her and Bitzy was soon brought to the Parks Canada warden’s office.

Her owner was overjoyed when she heard the news.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Shauna Traub. “I couldn’t believe that she had survived. I couldn’t believe that she had survived five nights out there. She was licking, licking, licking and wagging her tail. She was thrilled.”

Bitzy was found about eight kilometres from where she went missing. She was reunited with her owner on Wednesday.

The dog was a little sore and ended up losing a little bit of weight, but will be okay.
