Officials with the Town of High River say that preparations for a commemoration ceremony for last year’s flooding are well underway.

On June 20, 2014, a ceremony will take place in the community acknowledging the disaster itself as well as the town’s resilience and recovery afterwards.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says that the day of the flooding in 2013 is still at the front of many people’s minds.

“We need to remember this day because it defines the changes that High River is now experiencing. Our town went through a terrible disaster on June 20, 2013, and we are all going to be thinking about that on the one-year anniversary.”

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Museum of the Highwood on 1 Avenue S.E. with a short ceremony followed by a barbeque sponsored by ATCO Gas in Rotary Park.

Federal and provincial representatives, as well as representatives from many of the different organizations that’ve stepped forward to help in High River will be speaking at the ceremony.

“We are honoured to have representatives join us from the government and the groups who were so instrumental in helping us through June 20 and in our recovery over the past 12 months,” said Snodgrass.

More details about the event will be revealed throughout June.
