A 24-year-old man and a young offender who tried to evade police in Okotoks following a break and enter in the community are facing a slew of charges.

Police were called to a complaint of a residential break-in last Thursday morning and say three vehicles were taken from the home.

They found one of the vehicles with two males in it at the Walmart parking lot and police say that the pair fled when they tried to conduct a traffic stop.

RCMP pursued the vehicle and then terminated the chase but their cruiser then crashed into another vehicle, which was not part of the incident.

Two males were later located by police and arrested.

James Anthony Chartrand, 24, of no fixed address, is charged with:

  • Two counts of assault with a weapon
  • Four counts of assault a peace officer
  • Two counts of fail to stop at the scene of an accident
  • Two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Three counts of flight from police
  • Break and enter and commit theft
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Three counts of motor vehicle theft
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Two counts of fraud
  • Identity Fraud

An RCMP officer suffered a broken arm in the crash and was treated and released from hospital. The driver of the civilian vehicle was not injured.

A bail hearing was held for Chartrand and he was remanded in custody.

A 16-year-old male from Calgary was also involved and is facing several charges. He cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and will be in Calgary youth court for a bail hearing on Wednesday.

Chartrand is expected to next appear in Provincial Court in Okotoks on Friday July 22, 2016.
