Two women are recovering in hospital from serious injuries after they were hit by an out-of-control car in the southeast community of Quarry Park on Tuesday night.

Police and EMS were called to the scene on Quarry Park Boulevard S.E. just after 9:00 p.m. for reports of a crash.

An eastbound BMW had apparently lost control, jumped the curb and hit the women who were on the sidewalk.

Sheila Tankay, 38, and Irish Atibula, 36, work at Mucho Burrito and were on their way home when they were hit.

They women were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. One woman had surgery to repair a broken wrist and arm and the other has a shattered pelvis and internal injuries.

Investigators say cooperation from witnesses has helped them in the case.

“They were able to assist in providing information as it pertains to precisely what happened this evening and were instrumental to EMS upon their arrival as well,” said Acting Sergeant Cody Reuser.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident, but police have not ruled out excessive speed.

No charges have been laid so far and the investigation is ongoing.
