Calgary police have apprehended one man following an afternoon crash in a southeast intersection involving a stolen truck and trailer.

“A 33-year-old male stole a vehicle from one residence and then stole a trailer from another location and was driving that vehicle dangerously through the city,” said CPS Staff Sergeant Philip Hoetger.

Ground police units began a pursuit of the stolen vehicle but abandoned their chase in order to prevent unnecessarily endangering members of the public. The HAWC helicopter was deployed.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., prior to the arrival of air support, the stolen truck and trailer collided with a car in the intersection of Southland Drive and Fairmount Drive Southeast. The suspect fled the crash scene on foot.

“After the collision, citizens in the area followed and kept eye on this male,” said S/Sgt. Hoetger. “Police officers were in the area shortly after the incident occurred so witnesses directed us to the male’s jacket that he had discarded and then to the male about a block away.”

The suspect was arrested in the parking lot of a nearby strip mall.

According to police, the occupants of the car suffered minor injuries and were assessed by EMS at the crash scene.

Charges are pending against the suspect.
