A woman has died in hospital after she was found unconscious in the basement of a Bowness home by Calgary fire crews on Thursday night.

Crews were called to a single story duplex in the 4300 block of Bowness Road N.W.

They soon found a fire in one of the two units of the building and a unit that entered the home found a woman in the basement.

She was removed and turned over to EMS.

She died later in hospital.

As for the home, crews found it to be filled with thick black smoke and extinguished the fire, which was localized to one room of the home.

The structure sustained extensive smoke damage as a result.

The occupants of the other side of the duplex were evacuated and no one was injured.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The autopsy is scheduled for later on Friday.
