A young girl was hit by a truck in the southeast Calgary community of New Brighton on Thursday evening, suffering minor injuries as well as a possible broken leg.

At around 6:45 p.m., witnesses say that the young girl was running when she slipped on some gravel and ended up falling into the path of the truck.

The girl was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital to be treated for scrapes and bruises, as well as a possible broken leg.

Officials say she’ll be making a full recovery.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and police haven’t said anything about any possible charges.

The incident is the latest pedestrian crash that’s taken place in the city in the past few weeks and council is waiting on the results of a report into pedestrian safety in Calgary.

The 100 page report, called ‘Step Forward’, consists of a strategy to improve the safety of pedestrians in the city.

The initial draft of the study includes dozens of recommendations such as reducing residential speed limits to 40 km/h, adding more crosswalks in busy areas and setting up flashing strobe lights at crossings.

Ward 9 councillor Gian-carlo Carra says that, going forward in Calgary’s new communities, the new streets need to be built purposely to reduce speed.

He also stressed the importance of long and short term solutions.

“I hear from a lot of constituents that this road or this road is a death trap. I’m not sure that that kind of language really helps. I don’t think that they’re death traps, they’re just not as safe as they could be, they need to be in and if we’re going to make those changes, we have to be resolved and we have to commit to a long term transition.”

The report is due to come before council in April or May.
