The largest youth science fair in Canada wrapped up in Calgary with 700 Calgary area students competing for top honours.

Most of the students have worked for months with some taking a year to complete their entries.

Students from grades 5 to 12 were showing off their projects with everything from insect farming to brain science to GMO crop production on display.

University professors overseeing some of the projects say the science fair isn’t about winning medals, but about getting people excited about science.

The top 12 winners of the Calgary science fair head to the national competition in Fredericton this May.
