Calgary animal rights activists are condemning the Stampede for the death of a steer during Thursday afternoon's rodeo.

Members of the Calgary Animal Rights Meetup Group gathered outside the Stampede grounds Friday afternoon.

They say animal deaths at Stampede hurt our city's reputation.

The steer suffered a spinal injury after being thrown to the ground in yesterday's steer wrestling competition.

Stampede officials originally said it had a pinched nerve or soft tissue injury.

They later determined the animal had a serious spinal injury and was destroyed.

The Stampede says it won't be changing any of its procedures because of this incident but will listen to the advice of the SPCA officers monitoring the events.
