The man and woman who tortured and killed a six-year-old Calgary girl have had the appeal for their murder convictions dismissed by the Supreme Court of Canada.
On Monday morning, Marie Magoon and Spencer Jordan requested that the Supreme Court nullify their first-degree murder convictions for torturing and beating Meika to death in 2011.
The pair was originally found guilty of second-degree murder, but the Crown upgraded those convictions in an appeal.
Meika died in November 2011, just a day after she was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital suffering from multiple internal injuries, extensive bruising, at least five blows to the head and a severe burn on her hand.
Magoon and Jordan contended that the girl’s injuries were the result of a fall down the stairs, but the trial judge found that that was inconsistent with the expert testimony.
The court also heard that the pair had admitted to harming the child in a 'Mr. Big' operation.
Both Magoon and Jordan are serving life sentences with no chance of parole for 25 years.
The Supreme Court dismissed their appeal with a vote of 9-0.
The reasons are expected to be released at a later date.
