There is a warning for business owners about a strange phone call they may receive.

CTV's consumer specialist Lea Williams-Doherty reports that the Better Business Bureau and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce issued a warning about someone calling people pretending to be from the bureau.

The caller would ask people if their company was planning to move.

If they said no or if they started asking too many questions, the caller would hang up.

But if people said their company was, in fact, moving or closing down, the caller would ask for more details.

The local Better Business Bureau said it also received a phony call from someone who claimed to be from the Chamber of Comerce.

The person who took the call at the bureau said they would have to check whether their office was moving and asked for a call-back number.

The caller declined to give one, stating that they would call back, but never did.

Over the last several weeks, several Calgary companies have reported this call to the Better Business Bureau, and the calls seem to be increasing this week.

The bureau says businesses across North American have reported receiving similar calls so clearly, it's not just a local moving company or realtor looking for leads.

And while the Better Business Bureau doesn't know who is doing it or why, it has a theory.

"Our theory is they're targeting out-of-business companies or companies that are moving and they're trying to take over that company's address and information so they could send out bills or even receive inquiries about, say a car, and then ask for payment," said Kara Hendriksen with the bureau.

"So we're looking at even a deeper scam, scamming the companies first and then scamming the consumer."
