Plans are underway to give the Telus Convention Centre a $300-million makeover.

"In order for the convention centre to remain competitive, within the national and international arena, we need to consider potential expansion," says Heather Lundy, a spokesperson for the convention centre.

The centre is now accepting expansion proposals from consultants.

Officials at Calgary Economic Development support the expansion idea. "Anything that can put Calgary onto the map and events are getting bigger and bigger and so being able to have that capacity to be able to hold bigger events will be great for the city," says John Hankins.

Because the expansion is just in the early stages there is no word yet on who will pay for it or where the extra space will come from. Officials with the Telus Convention Centre say they may have to expand outside the downtown core.

In 2000, the centre expanded with the addition of the north tower. That expansion was funded by the city, the province and Telus.

Lundy says if the project gets council approval, it could be completed by 2013.
