Thursday is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

To commemorate the annual event, people in Inglewood answered the call to give their community a makeover.

They spent the day cleaning up green spaces, alleys, and bus shelters and they're hoping the clean-up initiative spreads to other parts of the city.

Volunteers from Travel Alberta took part in the community cleaning.

Annetta Grant says they just opened their office in Inglewood in January and the social committee wanted to show residents that they care about the community.

"We were really looking for a way to participate in the community. We love being here, and we wanted to show the community that we like being here, and we wanted to support that Inglewood is a great place to live, work, and visit," said Grant.

After all the work, everyone celebrated their efforts with a barbecue.

A number of events took place across the city to mark Earth Day.
