Calgary Forest Lawn was tragically left vacant after Conservative MP Deepak Obhrai passed away in August from an aggressive form of liver cancer. He was the first ever Hindu to be elected to the House of Commons and was the longest serving Conservative MP in Parliament. He was considered a champion for inclusivity and diversity and that message was most prominent during the Tories leadership race to replace Stephen Harper. Obhrai had been the representative of Calgary Forest Lawn since 1997 and was set to contest his eighth federal election. His son ran in the Tory nomination over the summer but lost to Jasraj Singh Hallan.
