Police say that a Calgary man is facing a list of charges after a parent found a series of disturbing text messages and images on their child’s cell phone.

In January, members of the CPS Child Abuse Unit were contacted by a concerned parent after they discovered messages of a sexual nature on their child’s phone.

Police say the images also contained child pornography.

Staff Sergeant Rob Rutledge, with the CPS' Child Abuse Unit, says there was also physical contact between the victim, a 10-year-old boy and the accused.

He says they met in person outside the home, at which time an assault took place.

During the course of the investigation, police discovered that the suspect’s phone number was linked to an unrelated sexual assault from Queens Park Cemetery in July 2014.

During that incident, a woman was at the cemetery paying respects to a loved one when she was assaulted by a naked man.

"He forced her to the ground and demanded that she take off her clothes," said Rutledge. "She was able to fight back and scream and yell and force the offender to run away."

He said that a number of notes were posted throughout the area the incident occurred describing sexual acts. The notes also included a cell phone number which helped investigators link the two incidents.

Rutledge says they are not aware of any other sexual assaults that occurred.

Peter Anthony Goulden, 50, is charged with:

  • two counts sexual assault
  • investigation to sexual touching with child under 16 years
  • sexual interference with child under 16 years
  • possession of child pornography
  • accessing child pornography
  • luring child by telecommunication
  • make explicit material available to a child

Police are continuing to investigate to ensure there are no other victims.

Rutledge says that it's of paramount importance that parents speak with their kids and are aware of what they do online. "It's the parent's opportunity to sit down with their child, to know who their friends are, where they are hanging out. If they've provided them with a phone for safety purposes, make sure that if the child is spending more than a normal amount of time on his phone, talk to the child about what's going on in their life."

He says there are a lot of resources in Calgary for parents to use and the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre website can help too.

Goulden has been remanded into custody and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
