The Calgary Police Service is investigating whether it can use hybrid vehicles in an attempt to be more eco-friendly.

"We certainly want to be as responsible as we can to the environment. It is on everybody's mind in the public right now and it's also on the Calgary Police Service's mind and we intend to become eco-friendly," says Deputy Chief, Jim Hornby.

The police have started a review to figure out how hybrids could be incorporated into its fleet of vehicles. "[We're looking at] where in the service could we use that kind of technology," says Hornby. "There's no doubt in my mind there is room for hybrids, or in the future electric cars, within the Calgary Police Service."

Hornby says, right now, the hybrids may not work for its 500 font-line cars. "We have to understand that for first response vehicles there is normally a requirement for something that maybe that technology can't deliver."

The police service has already made several steps towards going green. It has the largest number of bike patrol units in the country, numerous beat patrols on foot and any new facilities being built are green and eco-friendly.
