Investigators with the RCMP Major Crimes Unit out of Calgary say the disappearance of a Brooks man in July is now being treated as a homicide and a warrant has been issued for the arrest of another man in connection to the case.

Mohamed Jama Abdi, 44, was last heard from on July 14 and was reported missing to police 10 days later.

Police say that Abdi’s remains have not been located but they have issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of Ali Abdullahi Awale, 40, of Brooks, for second-degree murder.

Investigators believe Awale left Brooks on a bus on July 16 and boarded a plane in Toronto on July 23 bound for Somalia.

Police are appealing to the public for information about:

  • The activities of homicide victim, Mohamed Abdi before July 16, 2015
  • The activities of wanted person, Ali Abdullahi Awale
  • The whereabouts of Mohamed Abdi’s body

“I appeal to residents of the Brooks Community for any information in this matter”, said Sergeant Raimo Loo, Brooks RCMP Acting Detachment Commander.  “Your assistance could help our investigators to find Mohamed’s body, so it can be returned to his family.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Brooks RCMP at 403-794-4400 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.tipsubmit.com.
