A city committee is asking council to consider renaming one of Calgary's most popular dog parks.

Southland Park is spread out over 62 acres and is on the eastern edge of Southland Drive just off of Deerfoot Trail S.E.

The Priority and Finance Committee made the decision on Tuesday to rename the park after Sue Higgins.

Higgins is a former city councillor and was a key player in creating the popular green space.

She represented southeast Calgary from 1977 to 1983 and again from 1986 to 2001.

Higgins also has a bridge over the Bow and an Arena named after her.

Before Southland Park was created there was talk about creating a golf course on the land.

A citizens group lobbied the city in 1992 and won and the park was established in 1994.

It is now the largest fenced off-leash area in the city.

“I think it’s a good idea. This person put in the time to make it a dog park for the dogs, why not give her the credit she deserves,” said dog owner Jamie Richard.

“It makes sense because I know she was the alderman for this area for quite a long time,” said Park user Rachel Sutton.

The mayor and council will likely vote on the name change on November 19.
