Members of the Airdrie Fire Department battled a faulty fire hydrant and a devastating fire that damaged three homes and three detached garages early Thursday evening.
Shortly after 6:00 p.m. fire crews were called to a location near the 200 block of Tanner Drive, in the community of Thorburn as flames and thick smoke poured into the air. A faulty hydrant briefly challenged the firefighting effort but a secondary water source was secured in quick measure.
The street was closed to traffic and residents of three neighbouring residences were evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure. Crews successfully extinguished the blaze and remained on the scene for several hours to monitor hotspots.
Crews have identified a detached garage that had a vehicle parked inside as the likely origin of the fire.
"This was a garage that was detached in the back," said Deputy Chief Garth Rabel of the Airdrie Fire Department. "We do have exposure damage to three additional homes as well as two other garages. We're talking about siding (and) some windows have been broken."
"No injuries to report, thankfully."
The cause of the blaze has not been confirmed and remains under investigation.
