The four police officers who were first on the scene of a triple murder in Medicine Hat testified at the Jeremy Steinke trial on Monday.

Steinke is accused of killing his girlfriend's parents and younger brother in April of 2006.

Medicine Hat Police Service officer, Ian Scrivener was emotional on the stand while he described the scene he came across. Scrivener's voice cracked as he recounted the bloody handprints found throughout the home and the sight of the eight-year-old boy dead in his bed.

The Crown also gave its opening statement on Monday. The Crown is drawing attention to the relationship between Steinke and the daughter of two of the victims. The Crown says the two were dating and the daughter was the motive for the murders. The Crown says the girl exchanged emails with Steinke indicating she wanted the family killed.

During Monday's proceedings, Steinke sat quietly, often looking at the ground with a puzzled expression.

The 25-year-old's mother and sister sat in on the proceedings and vow to attend each day of the trial.

Steinke could face life in prison if he is found guilty of the charges.

The trial continues on Tuesday.
