An afternoon crash in Lethbridge County has claimed the life of a young boy.

The collision occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Range Road 21-1 (Howe Road) and  TWP Road 8-4 (Brown Road) when a Buick sedan and a Jeep SUV collided.

According to RCMP, the northbound Buick failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by the westbound Jeep on the car's passenger side.

A four-year-old child who had been in the backseat of the car suffered serious injuries in the crash. Witnesses attempted to assist the young boy, providing CPR until EMS and fire crews arrived, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the two vehicles and a child, age not confirmed, were transported by ambulance to the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge.

The surviving occupants of the Buick, the female driver and a child, suffered non-serious injuries in the crash. The lone occupant of the Jeep, the female driver, was transported in stable condition with non-serious injuries.

"The investigation is currently ongoing," explained Staff Sgt. Glenn Henry of the Coaldale RCMP at the crash site. "The traffic reconstructionist is on scene from the RCMP to piece together the collision. It's still in the early stages."

"This is a terrible tragedy for the family."

The intersection was closed to traffic for several hours during the investigation into the collision.
