Hockey Calgary to review the age at which bodychecking is introduced in minor hockey.

The governing body has decided to investigate the issue by focusing on studies of contact in hockey before deciding what's the best option for their league.

Currently, kids begin bodychecking in Peewee, when they are between 11 and 12-years-old. Some people are pushing for hitting to be delayed until Bantam, when the children are 13 and 14-years-old.

Todd Millar, the President of Hockey Calgary, says the issue of body checking is not cut and dry.

"With respect to long term player development (body checking) is paramount," says Millar. "But do you put that ahead of the safety of some of our other children who are maybe inside of the lower levels of peewee or bantam?"

If Hockey Calgary does decide to delay bodychecking until Bantam, the change would not happen until the start of 2012-2013 season.
