The Calgary Fire Department says that one person and their two cats are safe after their northwest home caught on fire on Friday morning.

Crews were called to the home on Hawkstone Place N.W. and found a large volume of smoke coming from the roof and eaves of the home.

Acting Battalion Chief Bruce Gelhorn said that a second alarm was called to make sure that neighbouring homes were kept safe from the flames.

“It was quite a quick knock down. A second alarm was called just to get additional resources based on the proximity of other houses in the district. As that’s said, those two houses were evacuated as a precaution and the fire did not spread or cause damage to any of the houses on either side.”

The sole resident who was home at the time was alerted to the fire by a neighbour, Gelhorn said, because the bulk of the flames were in the attic of the home and therefore didn’t trigger any smoke alarms.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Most of the damage at the home was in the chimney and attic space, but one of the interior rooms did suffer some damage.

“There was some damage to the attic in one of the rooms upstairs. The ceiling had to be removed to get at the fire.”

Fire crews are still at the scene to ensure the fire has been properly extinguished and there are no hotspots.

Gelhorn says it is still very early in the investigation and there are no details on a cause at this time.

The residents of the two homes that were evacuated have been allowed to return home.
