The woman who jumped in to help save a man on fire in downtown Calgary Thursday morning is talking about her brave actions.

Laura Halleran is a student-teacher who was walking by the Harry Hays federal building downtown when she heard the man screaming.

She tells CTV that she turned around and saw the man completely engulfed in flames.

Halleran started yelling at him to drop and roll. A number of nearby construction workers also ran over to try and put the man out.

"We were trying to kick snow on him but it didn't work and then I remembered blanket...smother...so I ripped my coat off and threw it on him and the heat was intense," says Halleran.

He was eventually extinguished by passing paramedics and taken to hospital with serious burns.

The entire incident was captured by a freelance cameraman who was in the building to attend a citizenship ceremony.

A source tells CTV the man was upset because he was about to be deported back to Algeria.

Canada Border Services refused to confirm that but did say they had a relationship with the man.
