A high streamflow advisory has been issued for the Highwood River and town officials have put the word out to the residents of Wallaceville to take flood precautions.

The town released a statement on Monday afternoon saying:

HIGH RIVER, AB: Monday afternoon, Alberta Environment issued a “Flood Watch” for the Wallacevile area of High River. This means that the stream levels are expected to rise due to impending rain, and flooding of low lying areas is possible.

As part of High River’s flood mitigation efforts, the Wallaceville area has been re-designated to return to undeveloped land where high water levels can naturally migrate safely through town. This area is recognized as part of the Highwood River flood plain, which will help alleviate water flow concerns for the remainder of the community. There is no concern for flooding in other areas of town at this time.

A small number of residents still living in Wallaceville will be contacted about the flood watch and urged to take appropriate precautions.

A high streamflow advisory has also been issued for the Highwood River. Town of High River officials request that individuals stay off the river and away from the banks for their personal safety.

High groundwater could also cause problems at this time. Residents should ensure sump pump systems are working properly and that downspouts and eaves troughs are functioning. Residents may also consider moving valuables and important documents in basements to higher locations.

Updates will be provided on the town’s Facebook page and website.
