The Calgary Public Library’s Central Library branch is set to receive a new security installation designed to dissuade drug deals and other illegal activities from taking place outside of the library's windows.

A series of metal bars will be erected this summer to prevent access to the alcoves along Macleod Trail Southeast while allowing natural light to enter the library.

Some homeless advocates feel the measure delivers an unwelcome message to people who live on city streets but Calgary Public Library CEO Bill Ptacek says that is not the case.

“It's intended to create a nice visual presence outside of the library but it also will restrict people from going into those alcoves,” explains Ptacek. “As much as the library is a public building, and we welcome everyone, there really isn't any reason for people to be congregating in those areas."

According to Ptacek, there were 32 drug-related arrests outside of the central library last month.

Ptacek says the library is a safe place and remains open to everyone regardless of their situation in life.
